"play sand" home depot product

I've got HD play sand (King brand) in my 10g shrimp tank, it's great. I probably would have bought pool filter sand, couldn't find it that day and wanted to set the tank up right away, so I bought the play sand. I'm happy with it, the water was cloudy for ~24h but has been crystal clear ever since.

I use pool filter sand in my tank. IMO it is easier to use than playsand because the grain size is bigger so it settles easier. Also, it is inert unlike some playsands, which can raise the pH.

thanks guys good info. one more question.

how do you guys clean the tank? this might sound stupid. but i clean my 29 with my python when i do a big w/c

i'm assuming that python is not made for sand. right?

i have play sand in my 75 gal tank and use the python to do water changes. the method of cleaning with sand is different than with gravel. you cant just shove the siphon into the sand like u can with gravel becasue you will suck up a lot of it. the method that works for me is to have the siphon just above the sand and use a swirling motion that quickly wisks all the gunk away. ive had this set up for well more than 6 months now and it works beautifully. HTH

I am just learnign to clean my sand with my python also. You can shove it in a little, and then when the sand starts to go up the tube pull it up and the sand goes back down.
I also netted something out of the bottom, and got some sand in it, and just shook it and the sand sifted out.

Go to Home Depot in the building supply section and look :look: for Silica Sand..cleans pretty easy ( rinse well ) and look great in a tank...

I will never use gravel again
