Pretty weird story here...let me start by detailing how my tank is/was stocked...

Angel fish x 2
Albino corys x 2
Red eye tetra x 3
Bala Shark x 3 (very small)
Platinum gourami x 2
Algea Eater x 1
Zebra Danio x 1

This was how my tank was stocked just about a month ago. I went on vacation for a week came home everything seemed fine (bro in law fed fish every other day) about two weeks ago i looked in my tank to stare at my fish and noticed some were missing...i thought they might be hiding out...i left the situation alone and checked again a couple of days later...still no where to be found were 2 Corys, 1 bala shark, 1 red eye tetra.

I feared that these suckers jumped out of the tank and were dead...so i looked around the tank and nothing...i moved the ornaments around and nothing. NO TRACE of these fish what so ever. I know my bro in law wouldn't just kill off some of my fish.

My question is, with the fish i had in my tank (see above) could there have been a case of canibalism? I mean if one of the fish in the tank ate the missing guys then they did a pretty good job. No left overs are in the tank...no bones, eyeballs, fins, etc. What could've happend? :shark:

My cats make quick work of any seafood that leaps from the tank, so if you have any housepets, there's suspect #1 for leapers. But cories aren't typical acrobats, so I'd suspect they died very early. Likely the surrogate caretaker overfed your fish (they won't fess up to it) and an ammonia spike killed the fish, and your tank mates polished them off. The algae eater (depending on type) will do this for sure.

well I can rule out the pets thing...i have none. (except for the fish).

It COULD be the caretaker overfed...But aren't cory's a "hardy" fish? I see the algea eater chase around some tank mates at times but nothing like taking bites out of them. who knows.

Sounds to me like Mako's avatar ate them!!! Lol On a serious note I have had the same thing happen to me but in my case not so many fish dispeared. What I had done was make all these little caves for my fish and when I wasn't there one day two of the caves collapsed and I did not realize. So when I noticed the fish were not there as you could imagine I was a little perplexed. It turned out that they had been crushed by the rocks and had all but disapeared. This may not be of any help to you but try to think outside the square, you never know what happens in your tank when you are not there.
