Does anyone know of a cheap source for these stock tanks? The 300 gallon would make a really nice pond in my basement. I called around and the only place that had them wanted almost $300 for the 150, I'm scared to even ask how much the 300 gallon is. :thud:

basement

In a basement, on a flat floor, you might prefer a stock tank. Find a feed store, and ask about a 300 gallon metal tank. I got one for $75. I scrubbed with vinegar in case there was any oil on the galvanized metal, then I painted with black epoxy paint, but I'm not sure that was necessary.

Be sure you can deal with the added humidity -- don't want to get noxious molds growing!

I never thought about the metal ones. Are they generally cheaper? I already have a dehumidifer to go in the room, so the humidity should be taken care of. I've actually been planning this for a few months, but I'm trying to find the best deal I can.

I don't remember where it was (location) or if it is what you're looking for, but I think I saw one on either www.aquabid.com or www.reefcentral.com

Thanks, but I would rather find one locally. I don't imagine shipping them would be cheap. Might be worth it though if the price on the tank was low enough...

I could be wrong, but I don't think they are US only, at least I'm almost positive reef central isn't. Then again, I just did a quick look over both sites this morning on my eternal hunt for a bigger tank and didn't see what you were referring too! Might be worth checking out occasionally

galvanized metal stock tank

My tank is 5' diameter and 2' deep.

I initially painted it wiht black eposy paint which eventually flaked off -- no primer.

Then I pressurewashed it, couldn't get all the flakes off with scrubbing, so I bought an 8'x10' sheet of pond liner form JustLiners.com for ~$40 and glued it to make a cylinder to fit inside and fold over the top.

Were I to do it all over again, I'd just rinse the tank to remove manufacturing chemicals and use it plain. I wanted the black color for the looks of it, as the pond is in the courtyard and visible/audible from most of the house. I used 3" diameter fence posts to make fake bamboo and used metal pallet banding to strap it to the tank.

I use a fountain/sponge/filter/water pump for the fountain -- no spray just gushing water to about 4" tall, then have a pressure filter/UV and large pump inside the pond -- this was overkill and a huge pain to service. I'd suggest one or two air driven sponge filters instead. The UV leaked when the filter got too plugged up, hardly need it anyhow, any spring green water is controlled by reducing fish food and waiting for water temp to warm. Need a replacement sponge for inside the pressure filter and can't locate one - Anybody want to buy a used filter?

I've got a 150 gallon stock tank in basement to house a big gar and some trout.
They work great and are really tough.

Mine is a Rubbermaid.
