Does anyone know how the two different Dat.'s get along together?
I have a Datnioides microlepis, it is about 2.5" long.
The LFS has a Datnioides quadrifasciatus and that is about 1.75" long (maybe a little longer but not much).
Will there be any conflict if I have these two fish in the same tank?
The water quality won't be a problem. the difference in salinity is .002. Their brackish is at 1.012 and mine is at 1.010.

It should be fine. I used to work at a lfs that specialized in the oddities, and he had both different kinds of Dats together. I have a Tiger Dat about 2.5 inches as well, but it despises brackish. Kept him in a brackish tank and he had the stress pattern all the time (all black) and about 20 minutes after I moved him to the fw tank he colored right up. SG was only 1.006. Didn't understand. Just make sure you have a big tank since both species will get a foot long, and with those big mouths can have few tankmates!

Well, I got the Silver Dat today and he is doing fine. He is sorta skiddish, since he is one of the smallest fish I have in my tank.
I also have the Mangrove Jack but he is too small to put in the tank. I had him in a reeforium on the inside of the tank and my Archer and Dat kept trying to get at him to eat him.
The Mangrove Jack will get big enough soon. It is eating very well. 4 - 5 guppies and 3 - 4 ghost shimp a day.

hey olaf..

how big is your mangrove jack? are you from australia?

i have one too.. he's about 7" now.. very nice colour on him.. the blye streaks on his cheeks are so cool..

i feed him about 4 prawns every 2-3 days..

My mangrove jack is only an inch long.
I live in the US.
It was being sold as a red finned Dat’. I knew what it was so I bought it. It is in its own tank at this time. When it gets bigger I will be transferring it to my larger tank (150 gal).
It seems very tame, very inquisitive, and already being hand fed.

i didn't know they sell mangrove jacks in the US.. they are native to australia.. dats where i'm from..

red finned dat eh? very interesting.. how much do they sell them over there? is yours in a brackish set up or pure fresh? they can live in both salt and fresh.. they are so fun to fish for.. cause they give you the biggest fight..

got any pics of it?

Lutjanus griseus, Grey snapper A.K.A. Mangrove Snapper

robdiep, what do you feed your Mangrove Jack?
Mine eats only live food...guppies and ghost shrimp.

I tried brine shrimp (frozen and freeze dried) and also live black worms. It checks the food out and then swims away without eating.

The LFS told me that you can ween any fish off live food.

Olaf,
Care2.com says that I must go there to look at the picture which you have posted. Any way that you can post it again, without the hyperlink to Care2.com?
