Oh, first the coral and now this. The beautiful little firefish I got at the same time I got the torch coral is missing. :( He and the clowns were swimming happily last night before lights out. This morning, the firefish wasn't there. I'm still hoping that he's just hiding in the rockwork, but he hasn't come out yet. I looked everywhere, including the prefilter and the sump. Firefish wouldn't hide out for this long, would they?

I've not seen any evidence (except for three or four scarlet reef hermit carcases) of a possible predator. I built a mantis trap today and will watch the tank after lights out tonight to see what happens, but I wonder if any of the other critters could be responsible. I've got 4 emerald mithrax crabs, 5 peppermints, a red fire shrimp and a scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp who looks like he could rip your head off.

Any ideas?

Any openings in the cover? A startled firefish is often a carpet surfing firefish. They typically won't hide if they aren't being harrassed.

There are two openings in the acrylic, but both have covers and there's also a canopy. He wasn't sizzling on the lights and if he'd managed - somehow - to jump out, he could only get out through the back openings on the canopy into the fishroom which is a closed room - no cats allowed. And I just took another look all over the floor, in the cabinet and behind the shelving. No fish.

He and the clowns seemed to get along fine - even bobbing around together. ::shrug:: I'm afraid he was someone's midnight snack.

are the intakes to your power heads protected I lost three damsels and a goby up my PH intakes when I first started my tank I had no idea they could get sucked in to those things. I got cage covers for them once I figured out what happened.

Yeah, I've got three maxi-jet 1200s and the grills are on them.

I've got a couple of monster scarlet reef hermits - I'd back away if they weren't contained in the tank. ;) And of course, that scarlet skunk. I dunno who it was - but he's gonna pay. Or at least get a strong talking-to. You just can't really smack your aquatic life with a rolled up newspaper.

Our Purple Firefish is a master of hiding. The only times he ever comes out is 1) when we cut off all current in the tank. (powerheads, skimmer, etc.)
2) Once food starts floating around the tank.

It doesn't matter who is around or what they are doing, but if any other critter in the tank gets near him, *poof* hes back in the rocks. This guy even runs from the cleaner shrimp.

I would not be surprised if he shows up-they can slide into weird places
Oh, I hope so, but I haven't seen him since the other night. Everyone's a suspect right now.

And it's even possible I could be mistaken and he jumped out of the tank the night before when I had the canopy up and a cover off. If he did, a cat must've swooped in and it happened so fast I never saw it.

Frankly, I hope he did jump out. Sad, but I'd rather it was my fault as opposed to an unsafe tank-mate.

Mine hides in the rocks when hes frightened-which is often!

I have never seen him come anywhere near enough to the top to worry about jumping out-I certainly believe that they can-mine just seems to be a diver, not a jumper

Do you have any plankton type food for your corals you could squirt around some of the rockwork-might pull him out IF hes in there

Mine has hidden for a good 48 hours +
