First, a little history: I lost several fish to velvet approx. 2 months ago, and since I kept the tank empty of fish for about 6-7 weeks before deciding to start adding fish again. Well, about two weeks ago I added a clown fish, and he's been doing great from the start. About a week ago, I added a tang, who up until yesterday also was doing very well. Well, this morning I noticed that my tang had white spots on his fins, which I suspect is either ich or velvet. Suffice to say I'm very frustrated by all of this, and I can't figure out why my fish keep getting parasites soon after I introduce them to my tank (so far, it looks like I'm 0 for 2.)

My parameters are perfect, with 0's across the board and an 8.2 ph. I've been feeding them both spirulina and mysis shrimp, and basically doing everything possible to maintain the best conditions possible (frequent water changes, etc.) Does anyone have a clue what is going on with my tank? Any advice for treating my tang, etc? Thanks.

How big is your tank? I'd say the tang has ich they are known ich magnets. You might remove it to a q.t. or hospital tank before it has time to infest your tank again. Try treating with low salinity and raise temp in q.t. to about 80 f . The problem probably isn't your tank from what you're tellin us but, the new fish. I'd always keep a new fish in q.t. for at least 4 weeks to make sure there is no little critters worming their way into your tank.

Your fish are getting sick because they're being bought sick. In the open ocean ich is less of a problem because of the amount of space means the chances of an ich parasite finding a fish is quite low. In the confines of a tank lack of space to go means the chance of being reinfected is quite high. Good tank conditions mean a fish's immune system and general health can be higher, but it's not a dead cert it will repel an infestation.

The answer is simple. If you don't want a diesease in your tank, don't put it in. Quarantine the fish for a good long time beforehand, like 6 weeks, and treat there if necessarry.. I truly don't believe I have ich in my tank anymore.
