I have a new 84"x24"x30" tank, with 3ft sump. Its occupants at present are various catfish, a distichodus sexfasciatus and an asian arowana. I am interested in getting a shoal of fish to be a focal point of the midwater area, probably somewhere between 6 and 12. These have to be fish that are obtainable at 5-6", so as not to become lunch and maybe grow to not much more than 12". I would like something a little different. I want to avoid silver sharks, silver dollars (including all the variations, Myleus schomburgki, spotted, red hooks, etc etc.), tinfoil barbs, they are all nice fish but can sometimes be a little plain, not too mention a little too easily obtainable. Any ideas will greatly appreciated.

clown loach?

Congo tetras grow up to 4-5 inches but may still be small enough for your other fish to consume. Clown loaches get rather big. Giant danios maybe?

I'd say go with some rainbow fish:

or some roseline sharks they get nice sized about 6"...though they will cost you a pretty penny!!

true tin foils with the striped tails would look great.

Yeah denisoni barbs at $40 a piece that will burn a hole in your pocket pretty fast to fill an 8 foot tank. I have three in a 4 footer. They grow pretty fast though my biggest guy is about 6 1/2 inches.

clown loaches are bottom dwellers and i really want a mid-water shoal. i have looked at denisoni barbs, money is not really an issue but they just dont get big enough. if i put 3-4" fish they will be eaten very quickly. the aro is about 10", not particularly agressive to other fish, unless they are too small.

had no joy with that link, but they are flag tail prochilodus right? I have had them in the past. considered them, are they a good shoaling fish or will they just go about things on their own?
