Hello all this is my first post, right now i have a pacu in a20 gallon tank, he will grow to a max size of 3 feet and 50 pounds or more, i dont want to have to buy a bigger tank every six months so im thinking about building a 200-300 gallon plywood/epoxy/glass tank. Does anyone have any experience on such a tank-the good or the bad? I am very mechanically inclined so building it wont be a problem. Ive never kept a big tank before though and would apreciate any info on what type of filter system to use and any other important info. Also what would the material cost be?thanks

I have a 1850g tank. I used concret and acrylic to build it. If you are mechanicaly inclined should be no problem. I have to say one thing if you are building a tank for a pacu may I suggest something bigger. Ply and glass tanks are fine with the volumes you are speaking of. I have no time now but if you want more information about big tanks I will post some later.

You should check out mojos basement pond here.

Mo is the tank buster king.

It will give you an idea of what he did to get his bad boy going.

Although you may not be doing the same thing it may give an idea or two on which way you may want to go.

Ive seen garfs site, that is where i got the original idea of building a tank, I am very new to keeping aquariums, all i know is my pacu will get very big and i dont want to get rid of him- basically right now i have about a 400 dollar budget for a tank, keep in mind 400 just for the tank - i still have a few months before he outgrows my 20 gallon, and later i can buy the filter system ect. But right now I have no idea if it would be cheaper to buy a big tank or build one, ive seen tutorials on building tanks but not a material cost list, i know at pet shops a big tank is expensive, i just dont want to have to keep buying bigger tanks down the road so i want to get a huge one now, Do you guys think i should just get a 75 gallon with stand, hood, and all accesories, or build a huge tank around 200-300 gallon so down the road i wont have to keep getting bigger tanks? Also i still have no clue as to how much a plywood/glass tank will cost me- im thinking around 200-300- to build if this guesstimate is wrong please let me know. As earlier any other info im not covering is greatly appreciated-thanks

oh one more thing - right now im living in a rented house and if/when i move i want to be able to move my tank, but at the same time want a tank that will be big enough to last my pacu for his lifespan. If this is not possible please let me know cause im still in the guessing stage right now and dont want to start the project till i know all details.

you might find that a 200-300 gallon will still not be enough.....our Pacu was in a 412 for about 17 years before we moved him to the big tank....and he is still growing after 25 years! ;)
