I recently purchased this fish and as soon as he hit the water the tomato clowns let him have it. I was afraid they would kill him but after rearranging the rock they have left him alone, however, he still hides constantly. Is this normal for a basslet? Also, do they have a specific diet? The lfs fed it brine shrimp but he's not eating for me.

Thanks

Most new fish will hide our for a while.
The fact that he got ganged up on and took an a$$ whoppig isnt going to make him feel like being out and about.

As for eating,
How long have you had him?
How did you acclimate him?
Have you tried any other foods on him?

Black Cap Basslets are extremely shy fish. Rarely will they hang out in the open. They will generally hide in a cave and come out for feeding time. It also depends on what kind of light you have in their tank that will determine how much time he spends in the open. The higher the light (PC's and MH's) he will spend little time in the open. In a tank with normal lighting he will spend more time.
As to feeding, once basslets are established they are little pigglets! I would use brine to get him going but then change to something more nutritionally balanced such as frozen Formula One, among other frozen formula foods made by Ocean Nutrition. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck!
