Pup Fish?

Hey,


Anyone heard of this type of fish? They live in DEATH VALLEY in a few water spots. They thrive in water conditions with temps ranging from 60 degrees all the way up the 120 degree (all in one day). They also live in water that has 5 TIMES the amount of salt normally found in sea water. I would LOVE to set up a 10 gallon tank that would simulate this environment. Problem is they arent found in the aquarium trade, So I would have to drive up to death valley and find them....

that would be an amazing feet. the only problem is that they only live for a year or less because they reproduce so fast and the eggs are left in the dry mud over summer, or whenever its dry, untill water comes over that spot again for the fish to hatch and grow.

i think they look pretty cool. they are really small and colorful. if its not illegal, go for it and see what you can do. but you pry wont succeed since the conditions are so sporadic and extreme. youd have to do a study over the life span of the fish to really get an understanding of how to simulate the fishes cycle.

Wow! never knew how hardy and attractive those things were, anyways, I know that at least one variety is endangered and quite illegal to collect, the Devil's hole pupfish, or something like that anyways, hopefully there are other variety's that are fairing better, talk about colorful, rare, interesting, hardy and unusual! All the desired qualities of a fish for the home aquarium!

On the docu, it said that a few selected fish hobbyist were given a few specimens and try to breed them. It said that in a few generations, most of the offsrings became "mutants". BUT I cant what the problem is??? Just replicate the environment EXACTLY!

add a few heaters so the water can heat up during the day to over 100 degrees and off at night. ALSO, add enough salt to equal 5 times that of the ocean. And configure the PH and the hardness of the water. If you get all this right, I dont see how you CANT keep these guys?

Yea.. those devil hole pupfish are cool. But according to that docu, that water spot is Fenced off. SO, if you know how to climb a fence :)

Yes, in nature they live to one year. But isnt that the same as killifish? BUT a killifish can live longer then that in a tank...

JamisonBWolsh, maybe they act like killifish because they are killifish. They are one of the families of fish that make up th killifish complex.

Really? They are a part of the killifish family? I did not know that. Thanks! I do know know that the desert pup fish has been seperated from the other species of for at least 20,000 years. They are a NICE species...IMO

Apparently, being an endangered species, I don't think that it's legal to collect them for something like a personal aquarium. The article just repeats alot of what you guys (or girls) have said, and adds a little more (like listed as endangered as of 1986, etc)

this is the first I'm ever hearing or seeinge about thesefish....and retty cute I might add ;) wish they weren't endangered....
