I use a normal gravel vac and hover it over the sand, make a circular motion while you hover the siphon vac thingy. You dont need to get real close to the sand since it may pick some up.

Good lucK!

In my tanks with sand I use pool filter sand. When doing water changes I use a length of 1" tubing to siphon the water. Hovering this about 1/2" above the sand leaves the sand undisturbed but sucks up any waste in the immediate area.

I have a mixture of pool filter sand and fluorite. I dig the syphon end of the python in. It brings up sand and gunk, and I pull it up before the sand goes up in the tubing, but the gunk does. It settles back down, and I use it as a method to rearrange sand at times, pick up at one location and move to an adjacent one.

ok thanks for all of your help thats why this is my favorite site to go to
