Equipment for a brackish tank

well in the very near future im getting a 55g . i wanted to know the equipment reuired to properly maintain the tank. substrate will definately be sand.would an aquaclear 500 bee ok?also i know i have to keep a very close eye on the salinity level.what instrument is required to ckeck the levels?i heard of a hygrometer and other stuff but im new to brackish tanks. im not in a hurry to get it all i just want to be sur i can prperly care for my fish. im already well informed bout the fish im getting so now i just want to get the specifics . could someone please enumerate the equipment required. i know i need marine mix salt but im having a hard time finding info on the equipment.
 
Refractometer... The aquaclear should be OK,,, Marine Mix.... And something to scrape off the algae with.

thanks ill have tons of questions when i get my tank now to get the dough to buy it is another story.
 
Other than a refractometer/hydrometer and sea salt, there is no difference in equipment or upkeep for a brackish tank. Just a little extra lingo to wrap your brain around.

If you have kept a FW tank, you are more than qualified. It's not like keeping a reef!

If anything, I have found the average BW fish to be much hardier than most FW fish. vary the SG/salinity with water changes by .002-.004 every month or two, and you keep most of the diseases/parasites at bay.
 
Also, never change the SG more than .002 per week or you'll have a biological shutdown.
