I recently purchased a 20g high tank that I am planning to make a planted guppy tank. After cleaning the sand a ton it finally went in and settled fast. My question is would adding nutrients (via liquid and other additives) to the water make up for the lack of nutrients in my sand substrate? Any success stories with just 100% sand or is it not worth the hassle? I really like how the sand looks, but if it is going to be such a detriment to plants, I will most likely go 50/50 sand and aquarium soil. Comments welcome.

I actually mix my own, I find it's a lot less expensive and I can tailor the mix to meet the plants' needs.
I know that many people have success using the Flourish line, I'd recommend trying their products out :)
