So I have some new angels that came in with fin rot... I've found a lot of general information, but not a lot of in-depth case studies, and I'm curious as to what other people have experienced. Have you ever had a fish with fin rot? If so, did you discover an underlying cause/stressor (e.g., toxins, parasites)? How did you treat it? Did it get better? Tell your story here....

By the way, the fin rot on my angels looks similar to the rot on this betta (though it's not as advanced):

Thanks in advance for sharing!

Have had finrot on a couple of my Bettas - I guess they came in with it.
Tried every possible cure - but never have I succeeded against it :(
I guess the easiest problem to cure is Ich.
Anyway, all the best with your angel.

I believe that fin rot is a sign of poor water conditions. Or at least in some cases it is. I had a sudden ammonia spike that triggered it in my tank one time. It hit about half of my fish including all 4 of my angels. All but one of my angels survived through it as well as the rest of my fish.

One of my angels that survived had almost all of his caudal and dorsal fins eaten away before he got better. They have now grown back fully and you can't tell that anything was wrong with him. Only one shows signs that its fins were damaged and that is where his dorsal fin split and it grew back with a small indent, so now his dorsal fin has two points on top instead of the one. I also had some serpae tetras that i bought with some fin rot and they healed up fine.

My advice is check the water and as long as the parameters are in good shape I think the fins should grow back. If they don't improve and the water conditions are good you might try using some mela-fix. I know alot of people swear by the stuff. I aslo had some success in stopping the spread of the fin rot by using some of the "Jungle Tank buddies Fungus Clear"

Fin rot is usually due to poor water conditions. Whats your tank ammonia, nitrites and nitrates? How long has the tank been running for? I understand that the fish came with fin rot , but for treating it sometimes just good clean water will surfice if the fish is strong. Other methods are using salt or medication, But I tend to steer clear of meds b/c of the stress it can put on your fish. Also salt will not effect your filter. Treating with salt is easy, usually 1 to 3 teaspoons will do and generaly most people go in between and use about 2 teaspoons, dont add it directly to your water or all at once , do it slowly and watch for signs of stress in you stock.

My ammonia and nitrites are zero; nitrates are 10-20. I've also started using Melafix, and it's still getting worse. These fish are going back to the store, I'm sorry to say, because the warranty period is almost over, and I have no confidence that I can cure the fish.

But for the record, are there any other stories of dealing with this? Any success with topical treatments?

The Melafix hasn't seemed to help my fish, at least not yet, but there's a good report on Melafix here:

Its due to poor water quality and/or stress. Fish who are battling disease, such as Ich, are known to come down with it as a secondary infection situation. Many new fish come in with it. Salt is usually effective, Melafix has been effective for me, and a broad-spectrum anti-biotic (Like Maracyn Plus or Maracyn I and II used simultaneously) is hard to beat.

I would pick up some Maracyn Plus and try that. Melafix is best reserved for mild cases.

Make sure it isn't fungal though (no fuzzy edges).

Great water quality is almost as vital as the medications. Do frequent water changes to keep th water as clean as possible until it heals.

Don't worry though. Fin rot is as common as ich and almost always treatable (unless its been allowed to reach the body, then things can get sticky).

Did you go to the doctor? Was he more concerned about the fin rot, or the fact that you had fins?

Sorry...The title just cracks me up. OG

Thanks for the helpful replies. Leopardess, you've made me reconsider returning the fish... I have to do it by tomorrow night, though, if I'm going to, so I'll start another thread specifically on whether I should keep them, in the newbie forum. Maybe some fast replies will convince me. :)
