I prefer mine 3+ at all times, unless you are doing daily or every other day significant water changes it can dissapear pretty quickly IME. My tap is 2-3 and even when the fish were very small in the big tank, it would deplete in a week.

So since my tap water is so low. KH 20ppm and the PH is 6.2 what should I do to keep the KH up to a bare minimum? I don't have access to crushed coral at present. Maybe the next time I go to the city I could check The LFS/LPS but the LFS in my town doesn't carry it.
Baking soda is cheap and effective. As a general rule of thumb, 1 teaspoon of baking soda added to 50 gallons of water will raise the kH by 1 degree of hardness.
