Looking for some advice on nitrate-reducing media, specifically the ones that claim to use the anaerobic bacteria. My reef has low nitrates, and I'd like to get them lower (from 5-10 down to less than nothing). I have plenty of room for a pile of some sort of anaerobic media in the refugium/sump, which already has very low water flow (on purpose).

Any suggestions?-- I'm avoiding a deep sand bed for various reasons

How about a plenum? Have you considered that? Some people are against them, but if set correctly can help with reducing nitrates. My personal choice would be 24/7 lighting in the sump and culture macroalgae, Caulerpa. For getting nitrates down very low this would be a beeter method.

For nitrates you should consider chaetomorpha.
You can set up a rotating (spinning) ball of this stuff with no DSB and from what I understand it will do well for you. Check out Calfo's articles elsewhere on the subject.
