I was out to eat last night at a local seafood joint. Don't worry I ate crab and no FISH!!!!:D LOL

Any rate, they had a really nice 100 gallon tank that had about 10 jellybean parrots in there. At least I think thats what they are called.. They looked awesome with thier colors and all.

I have been trying to add some color to my 55 gallon planted tank but am torn between what. Seeing how most cichlids need certain water conditions and also rip plants to shreds. Could these fish do the trick? I read that they are not aggresive as most cichlids are.

Could I keep 2 or three of these in my 55. My fish list is below.

4 cherry barbs
1 rosey barb
8 ottos

All the above fish are about an inch in size. Still quite small, and the tank is now moderatly planted. Mostly crypts and one large sword plant. So the majroity of the tank is wide open for grazing and such?

Has anyone succesfully kept these fish in a planted tank at all?

Thanks for the replies...

That they are. I had one (not painted!) and they dig up everything! I was doing a planted tank and had to get rid of him.
My LFS was happy to get him as he was about 8".

they are not all dyed. i *THINK* they are born dark colours and then they will go either a brilliant yellow or red. but you are right and most of them are.

I have what i think is an undyed one, or at least it is losing its dye. It is only a baby about 1.5 inchs long. they have GREAT personality and it doesnt bother the plants in my tank at all...or the neons or anything...infact only thing he chases at all are the angel fish =o....

but they are really really neat fish, a ton of personality. i have taken to hand feeding mine cause he has trouble getting food off the surface with his mouth

All cichlids are tough to keep in a planted environment... they all like to dig.

No jellybeans here, but I have kept blood parrots in a tank before and they even dig up fake plants.

EDIT: All this comin from someone who keeps a planted convict tank.... :P I have to bury plants every day... luckily, I keep plants that aren't too picky about it, and they don't mess with the ones that are because they are rooted too deeply and I don't see them working in teams to dig my ozelot sword up any time soon :)
