I happened to be cleaning out a room in my basement and found a very old HOB filter, no names on it. I put it in a tank and plugged it in and it worked!

Now the thing is I dont know what to put in it, it looks like it has some sort of removeable basket type of deal, it doesnt look like it takes any type of cartridge. So what should I put in it for filtration? Im just trying to get the tank cycled now. Something around the house would be best if its feasable.

Any suggestions?

Not household sponges. Sponges designed for aquarium filters. Buy one at a LFS thats bigger than your filter and just cut it down. I believe if you did use a household sponge it wouldnt let the water flow through it well and you could burn out your motor.

Also some household sponges come packaged with some type of chemical to keep them from molding if they are sold damp.
