On my 10 gal I would put my water through my Britta filter and then let it sit for about a week in before I'd use it in a water change. Now that I have a 55g I'm most likely not going to use my Britta, and I'm thinking about just using a dechlorinator. One question I do have is if I do let the water sit, is just letting it sit okay, or does it need to be agitated to get the chlorine out?

If you do use a dechlorinator, what brand do you use? Or is there even a differnece in brands?

There are two different things in city water. Chlorine, and chlorime. (I hope I spelt them right)

Chlorine is the stuff that is in pools and stuff. It kills bacteria. This will go away be it self in ~24hours.

Chlormine is another chemical that is fored when the water company adds ammoina with the chlorine. This chlormine is what prevents the chloring from evapourating. But not all water companies do this. It is best the check with your local water company to find out.

I use Prime for my water changes. This is because we have chlorine AND chlormine so I need something that treats both. There are other products that just treat chlorine.

Some people are picky about their products. Personally, as long as it says it removes both chlorine and chloramine ( I think thats the correct spelling), I use it. I think the one I have might even say that it removes metals, not 100% sure. I've never bothered to check if my water only has one or the other of those chemicals. I guess the water company can change/add things at will, so I would rather use something that takes care of it all and and be safe.

Aging is great if you have the space, time and there are no chloramines...........Chlorine will off gas easily(even faster if agitated), however chloramines will not off gas, so if your water has chloramines in it you need to treat it.

Chloramine does off gas, it just takes a lot longer. I tried it. It took about 2 weeks with aeration. Chlorine will off gas in about a day or two.

I use Amquel because its readily available compared to Prime in my area, plus my LFS refills it at a reduced price. I don't think the brand matters, the way chlorine and Chloramine is nuetralized isn't exactly rocket science or some trade secret. I've used Aquasafe and Prime before without any issues and I don't think any other brand would do a poor job either.

i use Stress Coat brand becase it is common and says it removes chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals. it also contains aloe vera and replaces the fish's slime coat when it gets disturbed. i think it's pretty good stuff.

What do you guys think about filtering the water with a Britta filter? Our water here is very hard and I don't really care for the taste of it too much, espeically when making tea... however, do you think this will really help the fish at all? Or would filtering it just be a waist?

Stress Coat does break the chlorine-ammonia bond and neutralizes the chlorine. But it leaves the ammonia there. If your tap water contains chloramine, Stress Coat is not the right agent to use.
