Exactly what filteration would I need far a touch and feel style tank for sting rays.

CRSAZ,

This is your third thread with the same question. :)

It is better is you just "post reply" on the same thread so that new people can read what was previously posted and tailor their reply based on the progress.

Good luck, sounds like a great project.

For one, a great big bottle of ibuprofen. We don't have fw rays, but coastal SC is full of sw rays, and believe me, the little ones are the most dangerouse, the stingers are much sharper and thinner than big rays, and they know how to use them.

As far as filtration, you could use pretty much any type of filter you want so long as it does these three things at least:

1) Mechanical filtration, removes gunk and debris from the water before it degrades into pollution. Keeps water clearer.

2) Chemical filtration, namely, activated carbon, like Black Diamond or Matrix carbon. I also use Purigen b/c it's rechargeable.

3) Biological, removes ammonia and nitrite via bacterial growth.

Rays probably like a decent amount of water flow, so don't be afraid to put a lot of filtration on the tank. A turnover of 10X the tank gallonage per hour is a good rough figure, via one filter or multiple filters.

touch and feel? wow that SOUNDS like a bad idea and I havent even pictured it yet.

be aware that YES stingrays do sting and the exact nature of their toxin isnt really known. Just like with snakes there are those that arent that poisonous to those that are just about as deadly as a rattle snake. Im a big advocate of hand feeding but that does not mean you shouldnt take caution when doing ANYTHING in your tank. Ive almost been stung when cleaning the tank (when I first got her).

they say the toxin numbs your arm but its full affects arent really known. try doing some research. BTW rays require MASSIVE filtration as the water has to be perfect.

and not to sound rude but why do you ask nearly Identical questions a lot? It seems to be a trend you have so Im just curious.

How do you debarb them? I debarb saltwater rays all the time (when I'm going to eat them) with needlenose pliers, but I don't think the ray likes it one bit (nor does he like the fillet knife).

Agreed I dont see the point either considering they grow new barbs every 3 months or there about...wouldnt make much sense

That is what they do at stingray touch pools.

They can't leave the barbs in the Atlantic stingrays so they remove them.

ok then but wouldnt they just grow back? and theyd have to repeat my process? also I would imagine that if it doesnt that something drastic would have to be done...I see no reason to debarb them and kinda see it as a little cruel. IMHO if I get stung thats my fault and I did something to deserve it anyway, so its kind of a lesson and not a bad thing. Ive only ever had my stingray ready to sting me once and that was because I upset him aerating the sand and moving a few plants. He kept moving/hiding and I would eventually make my way over to him and hed freak again....the second time he did a sort of swatting motion with his tail. Ill be honest, that was the first and LAST time that ever happened.
