Morning all!

Planted tank enthusiast here, and I'd like to get a pair of breeding dwarf cichlids for a heavily planted 55G (30G actual). I plan on taking all the remaining fish to another tank, but I can't remove the Japonica shrimp for various reasons. The shrimp range from 1" to 3" and tend to stay buried within the carpet plant mass 70% of the time.

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction: I'd like to find a breed of dwarf cichlid that doesn't get more than 2-3" long, doesn't dig too much, won't destroy my shrimp (who are big enough to swat away bettas with ease) and breeds easily. I'm thinking I'm in the right place to get good advice. :)

::edit:: oh, and this tank will wind up having high temps (83-90) and a low pH, somewhere around 6.6, due to the CO2 injection.

German Blue rams, Various apistos, cockatoides (sp), panduro, borelli, vejia, etc pretty much any of them. Kribs may harm the shrimp so not suggesting them. For the temps you say you have German blues would be the best choice for two things, one the temps, and two the swings, in the wild the pools they live in can go from 90 during the day down to 78 or lower at night.

Thank you! Once my paycheck goes thru, I'll be hitting the LFSs around here for Blue rams.

If you really want some quality rams don't go to your LFS. They get weak asian bred stock and they really aren't that nice looking. Go on aquabid and see whats on there, most of the guys that have fish on there are selling much much better fish with much better genetics. EMG also has some rams for sale on here you may want to look into. You'll be paying for shipping but its worth it.

I'm not sure what the difference is, but my apisto panduros hunted down and killed ghost shrimp in a 29g, but have not harmed the amano shrimp that is in a 10g with the same pair. I think they're faster and keep a lower profile.

All dwarf cichlids will do this, I've seen it in at least all of my pairs/singulars at one time or another.

They are still cichlids and will bully sometimes.

how about bolivian rams?

they're not as colorful as german blues, but i believe they're hardier and will breed just as easily.

don't know how they'll do with the shrimp and high temps though.
