 Hello to everyone! About 3 weeks ago I perchased a small albino tiger oscer (the best looking one in the tank) beutiful markings and color, but now it seems he got much darker than he was when I purchased him, I feed all my fish the same food, flakes which it seems that he doesn't like, but i also feed them frozen brine shrip, and pelets which he loves. Any advise would be apreseated. JOESKI

Albino oscars tend to do this. They look "dirty". You may not have noticed it in the store b/c of lighting differences, or he may well have not been as dark. Oscars tend to altar color a bit as they grow, and they grow so fast you can almost hear their cells sounding like rice crispies dividing like mad.

I had this happen when I had my albino tiger oscar. It's because there are varying levels of albinism.

In order to find a 'clean' albino oscar, you must purchase them around 3-4" and look at their pelvic fins. Any hint of grey, black, or clear, means that that oscar will most likely become a darker, 'dirty', albino.

Look for pelvic fins to be solid white and clean.

BTW, contrary to popular advice, a 55 really isn't good enough for an adult oscar. Just make sure the tank is at least 4-5 feet long, and 2 feet wide.

That a new expression , but I have to agree as they grow there colour changes, and it could have also been the difference in water quality, lighting and the stress level of the fish. As Mako said they grow extremly fast.

Oscars change colors depending on their mood and as they grow....its routine to not see the "normal" coloration of a fish in the fishstore because when stressed they lose a lot of color. I have a tiger oscar that is completely albino/slightly red when its stressed out and when its in a great mood the edges of all its fins turn pitch black. also my black tiger oscar when not stressed out gets brown stripes. I actually like the fact that my albino has black edged fins I think it looks prettier that way.

off topic. Anyone seen the new "wild" colored oscars? the ones that are tiger-printed with black, white and grey? they look beautiful as juvies but Im curious to know how their colors will change with age?

I purchased a marble oscar months ago and he was charcoal gray in the fish store. When I got him home, he turned jet black! He stayed that color until he became a juvenille, which he is now and his color is now completely bronze.

XseanX, I believe I know what you're talking about. My stores have new coloration for Oscars... Are they the same or what?

they are the same species but a different coloration quite beautiful but Im just curious if they were to change into a different coloration after they mature

Ya doesn't suprise my. My cichlids are always changing colors ... yellow to black, purple to yellow, white to pink.
