Yes, you read that right. :) I'm setting up my 44-gallon tall aquarium for a crayfish. I'd like to put in a decent sized group of a single species of small or medium-sized fish that I don't mind getting eaten. I'd prefer a fish that likes to shoal and is relatively attractive. I thought something blackish might look nice. I'll have a light-colored sand substrate and will be experimenting with some plants. Does anyone have a suggestion? If I don't come up with anything better, I'll probably just end up with some guppies or something.

Fancy guppys are kind of pretty, maybe neons? You might just check out your LFS and see what you like thats CHEAP, since you will be replenishing on a regular basis

I'd be concerned about the crayfish trying to eat its tankmates (the fish).
Yeah, I'm counting on it. :) That's why I don't want to put anything too pricey in there with him. Once he gets settled, I'll see how he likes ghost shrimp too.

I stopped by the LFS after work and am kinda leaning toward one variety or other of fancy guppies. It'd be nice if they would reproduce quickly enough to keep up with the crayfish's appetite. I do like the looks of some of the Tetras, particularly the Blackskirts.

I have a large female electric blue crayfish. For me, zebra danios and white clowds work out best. Feeder minnows die right away. Guppies and neons are about $2-$3 here. White clowds and danios are .99. They are both fast enough that they mostly last... for a while.

The guppies and tetras are $1.99 here, and I believe the danios are $.99. If the guppies spawn once in a while, I think that might offset the cost a bit. I still need to figure out where to get a crayfish though. I didn't see any crayfish in stock at either of the nearby pet stores though I suppose they could order one. The alternative is trying to catch one from one of the lakes.

My LFS sells white clouds as feeders. They are only 1/2 inch long, very cheap. I wonder if a crayfish would tear up plants?
I think he'll probably try. I'm going to try to keep him fed well enough with a variety of foods so maybe he'll leave them alone. Maybe...
