I just recently got my 20 gall set up and basically cycled it with a Betta that was being kept in a nothing size tank with no filtration.

Per virtually everyone's recommendations I just picked up a couple African Dwarf Frogs. My Betta immediately began to flare at one of the frogs and attack it. So I need some advice.

Do you think this might pass? Once they get their own territorry sort of set? I have a number of live plants so there are plenty of areas they could stake out. Or should I just ditch the Betta or frogs all together?

What's sort of odd is I put the bag in my water for about 20 minutes when I first got the frogs and the Betta didn't seem to flare at them until I actually put them in the tank.

Thanks in advance,
Curtis

Well...it's a big enough tank that the frogs can hide out until the betta gets used to them. You could take the chance and just keep an eye out for a bit to see how it goes. Are there plenty of hiding places for them to get away from the betta ?

My betta would usually test out whatever I put in with them, but then they would leave them alone. I have had cories, otos, ghost shrimp and ADFs with my bettas and the only ones that suffered for it were the shrimp. The betta would tolerate them for a good couple of weeks...then out of the blue they would attack and eat them..probably right after a molt.

He may get bored with them after the initial excitement of having something to attack...wears off...lol...maybe if you have anothe male betta next door for him to flare at, he'll be too busy making faces at that one that he'll leave the frogs alone.

Some bettas won't get along with anything. Most will display initial curiousity (and be a little pushy) but will quickly lose interest. I suggest making sure that the frogs have ample hiding places. Smooth rounded rocks piled into sturdy(!) cave-like structures should work. Even PVC pipes work. Make it so that they can get away if they need to.

Have you read the article on ADFs in my link?:)

I'd keep an eye on it for a couple days. If things are still violent, I may consider trying something else. I mean, if the betta is biting the arms and legs off I wouldn't wait that long, but hopefully he'll return to his regularly scheduled business.

my betta initialy bit 1 of my 2 dwarf frogs but i think he was seeing whether it was food or not, after about 1 day everyone was fine with each other. This also happend when i added a baby pleco, but once again it turned out ok. It just deppends on the betta, mine never flared up and yours did.

Oh yeah i also went out and bought 2 pieces of slate for them to hind under and they definately use it, and occasionaly the betta goes under it too.

I had a pretty rough introduction, and seriously considered separating them, but after a few days, all was fine. the betta would actually bite onto the frogs leg  , and the frog would take short "rides" around the tank, latched onto the bettas fin... No real harm was ever done, and now they ignore each other
