I was just wondering what kind of fish would be recommended to pair with a fancy tail golfish? If any...right now he is still pretty small, about 1.5 inches or so. Any suggestions for a tank mate would be great...thank you!

Just remember when looking for a tankmate for goldfish, that goldfish are cold water fish...so what ever you choose should be as well.

that being said, it should also grow large enough (possibly grow with the goldie) so the goldfish doesn't decide it may be a good snack once it can fit in the goldies mouth..... in other words, cories are definitely out (aside from cories preferring warmer water) if the goldie would see it as a snack, the corie would possibly wind up killing both due to it's spined fins. They are gobblers, so anything would need colder water preferences as well as being as big as the goldie once mature.

Please dont get mad at me....but he is in a 10 gallon..... :(

I have a viable excuse....I am a college student and I just dont have room for anything bigger....not to mention he was a gift from a friend and he came in a 2.5 gallon tank. So this is a definate upgrade from what he had....

I just would feel bad putting him with another gold fish since they obviously would need a bigger tank than what I can put them in. I was just hoping to find something that would be able to keep him company, besides the snail I have in there with him.

It's good taht you know he will need something bigger soon- but I don't think you should put anything else in there. He will be difficult enough to keep clean in a ten gallon.

i dont want to sound cruel but i am successfully running a ten gallon tank with a four inch goldfish, a 4-5 inch weather or dojo loach and a pleco. routine water changes and filter maintance is all i do. Even though i know they are cold water fish, i just cant support that, so i compensate with higher o2 leves and water changes.

Think about the new fish you are considering for a moment. Whatever hypothetical needs your goldfish has for company can't outweigh the new fishes absolute need to live in a clean, unstressed environment.
