thought id make a thread where people can come rant about their horrible experiences at their lfs's

Walmart sold me a red bellied pacu..which they said wouldn't get much bigger and would get along with my other semi-aggressive fish...

He ended up growing enormous and ate almsot every fish in the tank i worked so hard on!! :( :(
I think it was a pirannah that they sold me..

so many threads have altered into this topic...

I have the most complaints with my local Big Al's (Burnaby location, Canada). I have found them to treat their fish WORSE THAN WAL-MART if anyone can believe that. About 5 dead clown fish in a tank, no hiding spots in any tank not even for the parrot cichlids, and large shark fish that want to swim constantly in small tanks so they get about one thrust before they have to turn around. They seem to substitute care from the inexpensive fish and treat the expensive (large marine) fish with extra care in my opinion.

My LFS has a very knowledgable and friendly staff, and the owner is a great guy who really knows his stuff. The selection is always fantastic and the prices are reasonable. I enjoy every visit that I'm able to take there.

wal-marts evil

one time i was in wal-mart i went to look at the fish and i was looking and i got to a tank with 3 livebearer breeding traps floating around i looked close and they had a baby whale in each one and a baby whale in the tank i was so mad they were keeping them in there i asked the blonde working there and she says they are to mean to keep with the other fish oi was like there actually peaceful she like oh ill let them go back in the tank so she does. i leave and go back 5min later and here they are back in the traps. they are so cruel to fish there.

my LFS is terible when it comes to quarentining new fish. i saw a 20 gal full of pretty guppies, i came back 2 weeks later, and saw half were dead and sittin on the bottom of the tank! and i saw a tank of hatchet fish that had ich! and a molly jumped outta the tank, shrimp eat eachother, and the ppl there r kinda stupid. they see you, and u talk 2 them, and they say, "huh? im sorry?" i mean WTF1 :argue: :argue: :argue: :argue:

wow. my local big als is kinda stupid.i called to see if they had convicts and they said yes, i asked what kind . the guy loooks in the tank and says - oh they are grey. jeez. there is a walmart close by and the tanks are really clean. maybe they are trying to clean up their act or maybe they just hired someone who actually cares. super pet here is awesome though. the guy walks round with you and talk to you about all the fish and which ones they had problems with and all. hes not trying to sell anything. he knew his stuff. im kinda lucky since i have lots to choose from here in ottawa(ca) kinda sucks when you live in a small town you only have a crappy lfs thats smoking while there are dead fish in the filter intake.cant wait to get a load of those horrible wal marts out there. little local lfs<s are mostly horrible

Man...I'll have a new post for this thread every day!
I used to have a co-worker who told people cycling new tanks, 'You don't have to do ANY water changes for a month or so.' We had a talk about that.
Another guy I worked with routinely told people it was OK to keep a goldfish in a bowl, and they never get bigger than a 10 gallon tank will hold. I mean, FFS! It says right on the tank label with the comet goldfish in it that they get to 14"+!
We had a talk about that too.

do those guys get commisions or just are ignorant and want the people to get the heck out ?

i brought fish from walmart some neons i think i dont remember and some ghostshrimp. they bagged them together but i was in a rush so i couldnt complain. since they probably never feed their animals by the time i got home i only had ghost shrimp.
