Does anyone have any pics of a tank that has shop lights on it? I have been looking for some pictures to get an idea of how they look on a tank. I want to increase my watts per gallon but dont want it to make my tank look too bad.
Thanks

I use four standard T12 bulbs on my 20gal. The result is 4 Watts per gallon but the actual effect is more like 3 becuase of the lower output of the larger diameter bulbs. Still I have no problem growing plants in this tank. I purchased the fixtures and bulbs at Menards and built the custom hood out of prelaminated shelving. All for less than $100.

My betta tank is a 20g with 2 x 40 watt 6700 warm bulbs hanging over it with chains from the kitchen ceiling. Its height adjustable, I used mac-tac shelf paper on it folded double to make a shade and conc. the light over the tank. I use the extra length to grow house plants on my kitchen sideboard. I bought the fixture at walmart for 16.00, but I bought the bulbs at home depot to get a warm temperature bulb. They also sell sylvania aquarium bulbs that will fit it. Look at my link below, you'll see how the lighting looks.

Not the easiest to see in my link below but I use 4 T8 bulbs. I basically took 2 shop lights apart and just screwed the sockets into my hood. I also made sure the ballast is grounded ;)

I'd show you my older ship-light setup, but it's awfully juryrigged. :( I am a little embarrased by it, frankly.

If you've got a wood canopy then it's real easy to buy something from Home Depot and mount it on the inside, like Quartermain's picture. If you don't have a canopy then you'll have to get more creative. Before I moved, I had 2 doublestrips of shop lights hung on pulleys from the ceiling over my 40 long tank. IMO it actually looked pretty good and didn't require me to buy/make a canopy. The pulleys allowed my to lower and raise it for water changes and an eyehook in the wall let me tie it off.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics of it and since I've moved I've just been laying the shop lights on top of the tank. Need to get it setup again one of these days....
