I have a question. How does one tell if their guppy is preagnent? I just recently got a male and female guppy and today, he was flashing his tail at her and following her arround. She already has a big tummy, but she was like that when I got her. I was also wondering how long their gestation period is. I.e. how long after mating do they give birth? I hope someone has some answers for me. Thankx.

Female guppies are always pregnant.

Simple but true.

Breeders of quality fancy guppies seperate the sexes at a very early stage so that the females do not get mated by the "wrong" males. However, your common or garden LFS female guppy is pregnant when you get her.

Her tummy will grow till you think she will pop and then the babies appear. Expect a batch of babies about every month. If you want the babies, move the mom when she looks like she is about to pop. If you leave her with the other fish, most of the babies will be eaten the first day. If you leave her in the tank and provide some cover, a few clever babies will manage to hide and survive.

Also, the gravid (dark) spot near her vent will get bigger the closer to birth she is. Her tummy will also look more straight down from her chin.

Not the best pic, the guppies weren't cooperating, but the top female is very pregnant.
