I'm in the process of planning to convert my planted 29g, into a FOWLR community.

The tank is a standard AGA 29g, with an Eclipse 3 hood. Do I need a protein skimmer for this type of setup?

The livestock I'm thinking about is:
3 Ocellaris clowns
3 Black Percula clowns
1 firefish
1 dwarf flame angel
4 blue chromis
+ a couple of sand sifting stars, and a few hermits and snails. Maybe even a couple of orange stars to comb over the LR.

58 lbs. of LR and a 3-4" layer of aragonite sand.

Does that sound like too much for this tank?

I've been thinking about Rio pumps for water movement even though they act like little heaters. My cousin used them in his reef tank without any problems. But I am also thinking about powersweeps and maxi-jets.

I've had FOWLR setups before, but not with this many inhabitants, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

That's too much for a 29gal. Skip the RIO pumps, they have a history of problems. Get a couple powerheads instead. I'd get a skimmer, a Remora. How about 2 of each clowns, a firefish, the angel, some hermits and snails.

skimmers are essential, unless 2-3 water changes a week is wanted. You have planned for way to many fish, 4 fish in that size tank would be pushing it!!! Especially as the clowns are very terretorial, my ocellaris vertually controll almost 1/2 of my tank. You are best off buying quality stuff becuase you will have to repace crap stuff. Don't be diselusioned however, brands like weipro are great, everyone seems to hate them because they are made in asia but they are good pumps, crap skimmer though, get a tunze :). With the snails, you can't go past trochus, they are the best. They also breed heaps, so you get more/can sell them.

Good luck and keep us posted

Skimmer always helps keep water quality high. I'd agree with LittlePuff about the Remora.

I'm in agreement with the rest that your plan stocks way too high. If you get 6 clowns, you will have one mated pair and 4 trying to be invisible in the corners. I would go with 2 clowns, the angel and the firefish.

Yeah, looking back at it now, I know better than to consider a stocklist like that. I guess I'll wait till I setup the 80g, and just keep the 29g planted.

So in the 80g, would I be able to keep 2 ocellaris, and 2 black percs.?

Will I need 2 skimmers for the 80g? Is the Prizm skimmer any good? Or should I just go with the Remora?

I know that's a ton of questions, but I appreciate the help.

Even in my 90, my female ocellaris considered the whole tank to be hers. She kept the male in line, and frequently squabbled with the tang. Any other clowns would probably have been shredded. After she decided to explore the living room, I got a little juvenile to pair with her former mate. We'll see if he (now she) becomes as pugnacious.

Get one good skimmer. I have not tried any of the Prizms, but their reputation doesn't seem that great.

I myself had a Prizm and all I got out of the thing in 4-6 months was just tea-colored water. I went out and spent the same amount of money that I spent on the Prizm and got a Coralife Super Skimmer and in the first 24hrs that I had the new skimmer on it pulled a thick, coffee-like SLUDGE out of the tank and has been kicking butt ever since! You can find these skimmers online for sale for around $80 and in my opinion they are a great skimmer for a low cost.

Cool thanks for the help.

When I had my 55g setup as a FOWLR, I had a pair of juvie ocellaris, 2 blue damsels, and a tomato clown.

Yeah, not the smartest setup, but I was learning. I don't remember the clowns ever getting aggressive though. But I'd rather not gamble so I'll probably stick with just a pair of ocellaris, the flame angel, the firefish, and anything else? Can I put a school of reef chromis?

So one quality skimmer will do? I'll keep researching.

Thanks again.

Things get more interesting once they hit sexual maturity. The females become very territorial.

I have been very happy with my EuroReef skimmer. Expennsive, but you can often find blems on ebay for a lot less.
