Calling all amatuer sleuths and fishy PI's; please read case and offer professional opinion or advice.
I have a victim (small 1" zebra danio) of unknown causes last Sunday. He was in a 2g QT/hospital with 1 medium yoyo loach (2.5"), 2 small yoyo and clown loaches (2"), 2 small otos (1"), and 1 small sunset coral dwarf platy (1").
The Vic was found without eyes, belly, and tail on Jul 10, 1700hrs with the 2 yoyos munching on the body at the crime of the scene, but the exact time of death is estimated to be in time frame of 1500 - 1700hrs because Vic was seen alive prior to 1500hrs, Jul 10.
The Vic had been in the company of the above listed suspects in the 2g tank for over 5 days since he was put in there after sustaining a tail fin tear in a possible swim-by incident with other same gang members (AKA The Danio Gang) on Jul 4.
The loaches have been in the tank for over a week, the otos for over 3 days, and platy for 1 day; all for quarantine reasons since they have been newly purchased.
My partner (wife) and I have been assigned this case and have been puzzled since our research into loaches, otos, and platies show them to be peaceful community fish. Is there something us rookie cops are unaware of? I am aware of the switchblade under the eyes that the loaches are packing but still confused as to why they would turn homicidal.
I would appreciate input from fellow fishy peace enforcement officers as to the cause of the sudden demise of the Vic. Is cause of death natural or is foul play suspected? I will be releasing the loaches (my primary suspects) into the community (tank with platies, danios, and swordtails) soon and do not like the idea of a psychotic serial killer running (or swimming) free in there.
Please offer your theories and professional opinions. All input would be gratefully accepted except for the theory of the butler doing it... since I AM the butler... maid, personal servant, housekeeper etc....
