They're harem fish and of paired will overbreed the tank and eventually kill off any other fish in the tank. They can be quite tempermental. They're from Lake Tang in africa and require a ph of 8.2 to 9.0. Crushed coral will help buffer your PH in the tank as the bed or in the filter. Raise your PH water by using proper 8.2 or seachem cichlid salt.

I've had good luck using a commercial cichlid gravel (already contains argonite/crushed coral). It brings my ph up to 8.2 and gh to around 14. I don't pre-treat my tap water at all (ph=7.2 gh= 7). I just do small 25% water changes weekly. My wild caught multis are on thier third spawn using this technique. I'm not saying using addatives like proper ph or cichlid salts are bad, but I figure if I can keep it simple so much the better.
