Hello. I'm a newbie to the world of aquariums. The fish pictured here recently died and I'm not sure what type of species it is. I would like to know what it was because I'm not sure if I cared for it properly. It was one of my favorite freshwater fish in my tank and I would like to get another one. I did not note the species when I purchased it and I have not been able to find another one on the internet or in any store. The fish was between an inch and 1.5 inches. Any help is appreciated.

Looks like a leaf fish, more specifically, a Ctenopoma acutirostre (leopard Ctenopoma). Oddball has one, so he could share personal experience with that fish.

The one in your picture looks like it's a juvenile. The one in the picture I posted is a sub-adult.

That's him! Thank you very much SoCalSunset, you hit the nail on the head. Apparently our tank setup wasn't the ideal for his inhabitance. Much to my surprise this species is carnivorous and can be aggressive. I would have never guessed it since he seemed so timid. Thanks again!

I would research species before you buy. Better for you and your fish.
