I posted here about a month ago about a fish kill (20 dead) which I thought might be due to CO2 poisoning - well it just happened again, 15 dead this time. All died within the space of a few hours, doing the circle of death swimming routine. Looked back on my notes on what I had been doing, both times it was right after I cleaned the inside of the glass with a sponge/abrasive pad. Well I just found another one of the pads in the house in an unopened package, Scotch-Brite scrub sponge. I had thought it was just a sponge, but after reading the package there is some sort of bacteria killing agent in the thing, and it states in the fine print 'not for aquarium use'. Wish I had read it before, am pretty sure this is the source of my problem. Live and learn I guess.

it is always a good idea not to use anything inside your tank that isnt used specifcally for aquariums

Thanks for the warning, I don't know what I'll use the one I just found for, but it won't be for the tank.

sorry to hear that... so will you recycle the tank? Did everything die?

I'm extremely paranoid about things I put in, or around my tanks. I don't even use windex for the glass anymore, I use these little streak free towels that barely feel wet, yet they clean the glass perfectly.

I truly feel sorry for you..........but at least now, you've not only learned about the dangers of using househeld items in your tank, but you've taught others with your example.

Sorry for your loss.
I always make a point to use only items labeled for aquarium use. I also have those blue towels and I found a glass cleaner just for aquariums. It's called Safe & Easy, works great on glass and acrylic. I got it at www.thatpetplace.com great store...

Sorry to hear about your loss. :( Thanks so much for warning everyone else. :)

Using things specifically marketed for aquarium use is just staying ignorant. They mark those things up outrageously. You just need to do your research before using anything in the tank. If you want to wipe the walls of the tank down, just use some plain white paper towels. If you want to use a sponge or something like that, read the package and buy some soley for using in your tank, put them with all your other aquarium stuff.
