Oh boy...what a crappy day. I had duty all day yesterday and was anxiously awaiting the end of today so that I could check up on my new bristlenose. When I got home my tank was making a funny noise...I went to check on the fish and noticed they all had abnormally distended stomachs. I then looked to the top of my tank and noticed a ton of my Hakari cichlid pellets floating around. I checked my overflows and found the source of abnormal noise...my return tubes were horribly clogged with the pellets. You see, my wife is out of town and asked our 77 yr old next door neighbor to keep an eye on our dogs while I am at work. Well, my neighbor, with good intentions, decided to feed my fish for some reason. Unfortunately, she has no clue about fish because she fed them, no lie, about 30X the amount they should have been fed. I quickly took action to remove the food...it took me over two hours...the food was everywhere. I decided to do a water change as well. Now, checking up on my fish, all of them look like Balloon Mollies. My Convicts are doing well. My pair actually is getting ready to breed again. But I'm concerned that my Firemouth is in bad shape. He has parked himself in a nook within a piece of driftwood and is not moving. I think he may have eaten so much that he might be dying. His color is very dark…he’s normally just gorgeous. Has anyone experienced a situation like this? Did your fish survive their binge? Do you think my Firemouth will be OK?

Fast them for about 4-5 days and monitor the water parameters. They'll be fine.

Man that sucks, I just cringe when I have to rely on someone else to care for my fish. Even worse in this case you didn't ask for that service. I hope your fish are alright and pull through.

Next time, figure a way to put a lock on the top of the fish tank..I'm sure the neighbor meant well....don't tell them what happened...that person would just feel awful, I'm sure.....just be sure to find someone else to take care of the house when you go away....lol.....and don't forget that lock !

All the fish seem to be doing well...including my Firemouth. I didn't say anything to her...she's a sweetheart and I know she meant well. I just put a sign on the fish tank saying..."please do not feed the fish, thank you"

BTW, wouldn't a lock be pretty tacky? I have a really nice canopy...is there a way to secure it without damaging the wood/looking awkward?
