I am asking this cause I have 2 otos in my tank that are acting crazy the last week or so. I have read that the males are smaller and not as round as the females. If this is the case I have 1 of each. Anyways normally they are just hanging on the glass or cleaning something in the tank but the smaller one(male I think) is constantly chasing the other one. They don't sit still at all.

I know that they have been bred in captivity, but I am not sure what triggered it. Additionally, I imagine that they would have to be pretty much alone in the aquarium because I think that the eggs would get eaten.

I visited a website(which I don't remember where) that had pictures of such a happening. The tank was like a 20 long or so for size and he had 12 or so ottos in it alone except for the jungle of plants that was thick. He left the glass uncleaned....

that is about as much as I remember. sorry I'm not much more help :D

It has happened, but it is not common. I don't know of anyone doing it on purpose, most reports I have read tell about fry just appearing unexpectedly. I have heard of parotocinclus species being spawned consistantly though.

I have been trying and hoping to spawn my zebras, but no luck yet. However, my hisonotus have spawned (similar to otos, but easy to breed) and one of my "regular" otos appears to be full of eggs. I haven't seen any spawning activity yet, but I'm still hoping it may happen.

Well I suppose that even if they did drop some eggs, I would never know. They are in a 55g community tank so eggs wouldn't last long. I was just curious about their unusual behavior.

I heard it's like breeding some hyp. species you have to imitate the rainy season with colder r/o water.
