  i had recently posted a thread about sick cichlids in hosp tank well 3 of the 4 are now dead and the last appears to be doing fine. i am leaving him in the hosp tank for awhile until he is much better before i attempt to add him back in my 55 though. so the new question for advice i have is my large male auratus who was the instigator of the beatings to the newcomers is now looking terrible. last week he was full of energy attacking the new additions and now his belly looks slightly swollen and he is hanging out in the bottom of the tank propped up between a cople of rocks. i used the net and tried to get him to swim around but he goes right back to the same spot. my water has tested fine and i am clueless what to do. how long do cichlids live is it just his time?

what are you feeding him and how frequently?

howlong was he in the hosp tank

i feed a combo of flakes (wardley premium flakes), pellets (wardley floating pellets), blood worm cubes, veggie cubes, and brine shrimp cubes, fresh zuchinni. i alternate the flakes and pellets every other day and them a cube OR 2 slices of zuchinni about 2-3 times a week. my auratus is not the one who was in the hosp tank hes the one who beat the other new fish and put THEM in the hosp tank.

mbuna are herbivores. You should not feed them high protien foods like brine shrimp or blood worms. You should feed heavily with algae and spirulina. Sounds like malawi bloat to me.

thanks for all of our replies. he died. so no worms and shrimp huh. i do give the zuchinni and veggies cubes more than the other, wont give any of the worms and shrimp anymore though. this is getting so frustrating i have had this tank for 2 years without many problems i did thechecking at my lfs and some (not much) about the requirements of these fish, i knew they were agressive, i knew some could and could not go together, i always ask 100s of ?s before i buy anything in regards to food, treats, etc etc. and now more and more i am getting told different than what i thought was "RIGHT" i do appreciate all the advice everyone here has offered. my ultimate goal is to have this beautiful tank that i can just sit back and relax and stare at for hours on end and all advice offered is gonna help me get there. :help:

50G is minimum for mildER africaaners. Aurutus is one of the most aggressive ones. The aurutus male sooner or later would ahve killed everyone in there. Kenyi's, chipokee, or bumbebee also all got to go.

I stay with smaller and milder ones like Saulosi's, socolofi, Aceh, ruste. Electric yellow may or may not work out. I would not put more than10 fish in there.

THe tanganican dwarves will be excellent there or if your water is soft, German blue rams will be awsome.
