This is kind of a PSA but i was recently playing my bass guitar fairly loud. This is also about the time i lost 2 oto's and a koi angel. Unfortunately i noticed they are related and i can no longer play the bass that loud! does any one have a prior knowledge of this or solutions?!
 
i call bull on that. You can't kill a fish by clapping your hands next to it, although I have no doubt that a sufficiently loud sound could harm a fish. You can't even make much of a sound by clapping underwater.
 
I posted a similar question a while back asking whether playing loud music is detrimental to the well-being of fish. I tend to watch movies and play music fairly loudly on my home theater, and there's a subwoofer nearby. As you can imagine, there's some pretty harsh thumping going on when there's an explosion or something on the soundtrack. Doesn't all that loud bass slamming against the glass hurt the fish since they can sense vibrations through the water? The fish have been putting up with my home theater habits for a long time now, but maybe they've simply gotten used to it all. :duh:

It has been proven that whales or dolphins use sonar or sound waves to stun or kill their prey in some circumstances. Also banging two rocks together hard enough and close enough to a fish underwater will stun or kill it, very difficult to do yourself but true. So I know that sound waves will have an effect on fish and load music or knocks to a fish tank will be detrimental to your stock.

Btw clapping underwater would be impossible to make significant sound waves to have an effect on a fish.
 
Well technically, sound (in the air) can be loud enough to kill humans. So I certainly wouldnt doubt that underwater sounds can kill fish. The reason we usually arent so concerned about underwater sounds is that we cant hear them. The sound waves travel far to fast for us to pick up and process.

Now if you want to get into specifics, here goes. Because of the way sound travels underwater vs. in the air, you need to add 62 dB to any air measurment to get its dB underwater. Meaning, 120Db music playing would be 182 Db underwater. Now, from what I can find online, the sounds dolphins make to stun their prey are somewhere in the range of ~200 Db.

I listene to hard house (over 160 beats per min) and the evil strain of it too - my fish hate it and always moved to the backl of my tank. £2 of copper speaker cable fixed the problem as it allowed me to put my sub at the other end of the room!
 
clapping underwater to kill a fish!? LOL that is complete nonsense - unless your name is Thor no one would be able to generate enough force under water to even clap hard - i can't believe anyone would believe this silliness it's like one of those old incorrect theories passed down from generation to generation -
