I suggest going to a book store and getting a couple of cheap books on starting up a saltie. Save a lot of head aches. A v-tail or a leopard grouper are about hte smallest at 8" to 10". I would check out the pygmy angels, some of the different sea bass, and gobies tend to have a variety of natural colorations and are commical to watch. Great Luck!

if u like predators i suggest a snowflake moray eel
the smaller varieties are only 8 to 12 inches

i read a book called The Marine Aquarium Problem Solver and it listed a couple types of groupers that only get up to 6inches, but i can't remember them. i suggest u look for that book at the library or bookstore

The problem with groupers is how big thier mouth is.

after i read your post, i did some research. here's what i found:
Anthias squamipinnis- Wreckfish
alright, so its not a grouper. but its in the same family and only grows to 5 inches
Calloplesiops altivelis- Marine Betta
probably one of the smallest groupers. only grows to 6 inches in the wild

You might think about basslets, like a royal gramma or chalk bass.
