View Full Version : Remember the stray cat I took in?

Some of you may remember that I took in a stray cat and that he now lives with my mother in law. Well, Friday chris' parents were supposed to go to the Cape for a family reunion and their younger daughter was to stay with us. However, they called saying that Salem (the kitty) was sick and had to go to the vet. They were going to cancel the trip but I offered to drive up and spend the weekend there to take care of him and watch chris' sister so that they could enjoy the weekend (they'd planned it months ago and had been so excited). They said it would be excellent...thinking that the kitty only had a little cold or something.

So, later that day, we picked him up from the vet. He had a fever of 104.5 and was given antibiotics after taking some xrays and blood tests and determining it to be a "non-specific viral infection." They said to take his temp again the next afternoon/evening and to check it. I was surprised that they released him knowing it was the weekend but it's a small town vet and their facilities are subpar, IMO. So, he went home, was very lethargic, hadn't eaten since early Thursday, nor drank anything, would not go to the bathroom etc.

Saturday afternoon we took his temperature (not a pleasant experience) and found it was still 104.5. I called the vet and got no answer, was forwarded to their "Emergency Vet", and couldnt' even get a machine there!! Um Duh. I made a point of asking which local facility would take emergencies and that was them. That vet is getting an earful tomorrow, from Salem's owners, btw. So, running low on options, I called my regular vet down here for advice and they said he should be brought in overnight and put on fluids and whatnot because he was facing dangers with the sustained fever. They said I should take him to the Critical care clinic down here (only one in all of ME and NH) and it's the Emergency vet our cats have gone to during off-hours and holidays.

My first thought was either leukemia/HIV or cancer. Cats we've had in the past displayed the same symptoms and only had hours to live. And then I thought - "MY cats were just with him 3 weeks ago...what if they're going to get sick now, too!?"

So, I hurriedly packed up the poor little guy and chris' sister, drove 1.5 hours in pouring rain at dusk without my driving glasses () and brought him in. At that point, he was basically just an empty sack. He wet himself twice on the ride and had to be cleaned.

Upon arrival, his temperature was 105.8F:( Poor Kitty! He was also very dehydrated.

So, I had to call his "parents" and worry them on their trip (this cat is like a third child to them). He had a second set of xrays taken, another Complete Blood Count drawn, was put on IVs, injection antibiotics, leukemia/HIV tests, you name it. $1000 later.... (luckily they can certainly afford it).

He stayed overnight and is still there now (going on two nights in the hospital). Something was wrong with his blood test regarding his liver (vet gave a myriad of possible reasons, many of which are benign). That seems to be a secondary effect though. They can't find out what the cause of the fever is. These are the most apt vets I've seen and they've got several specialists so I know he's in good care. Tomorrow, they've got an ultrasound specialist coming in to check him.

Chris' parents shortened their trip and rushed home this morning so that they could be nearer to home in case something happened.

I feel so bad. Even though he's not technically "my" cat, he seems like one and now I'm very worried:(

EDIT: PS before anyone comments or asks. He was taken in around the first of October and he's an only cat, indoor only, no contact with outside.

Dear God, I hope he will be all right. This makes me worry even more about Pearl, she's 12 and has been dealing with megacolon for 3 years, on medication for it 2 years. She's lost some weight lately, I'm calling my vet to make her an appt. tomorrow. She's still eating and acting normal but the weight loss worries me.

Now BooBoo (my parakeet) is pretty mad at us right now. My husband scared the crap out of me, hollering up the stairs to me saying BooBoo was flapping about his cage with a broken wing! I looked at him and saw one of his blood feathers was sticking out at a weird angle and bleeding. We had to wrap him in a towel and pull the broken blood feather out, then pack the hole with corn starch. This was about 10 minutes ago!

I hope Salem (that's such a cute name for a black cat!) pulls through. It sounds like he's in good hands and he's lucky that you were so vigilant, Leo. I said a prayer for him just now. :hugs:

Oh no!! I do remember when you all found this handsome little guy, Leo... and when your in-laws took him. My fingers are double crossed that he pulls out of this.

I don't mean to frighten you but I had a cat that showed symptoms like this but he was an outside cat. Actually, he was my last outside cat, I always made sure I had indoor cats from that point and I feel awfully responsible for his death. He was a victim of Antifreeze. I found him a little wobbly in the morning, thought something wasn't right... rushed him to the vet. He declined at that point, I suspect because the vet didn't diagnose poisoning until it was too late.

I wish Salem the best of luck to pull through this, it certainly sounds like he is in good hands where specialists are involved.

we just adopted 2 kittens from the animal shelter last sat (buy one, get one free :) )and by friday nite, one of them kept sneezing and had a drippy nose and eyes. he seemed to be losing his appetite, not eating treats he loved the day before, and becoming more lethargic.we took him to the vet sat.and he had a temp of 104.9-(he did not like having his temp taken at all-he made sounds i have never heard from a cat!!!!!!!) they did the hiv and leukemia tests while we waited, they came out negative, thank goodness!! gave him an antibiotic shot and oral meds for him and his buddy at home.
only 160 dollars later, stanley and ollie seem to be doing well and are now running around the house as usual

Awww.... Let us know what happens... I really feel for all the pet lovers whose animals get sick, its awful. One of my cats had a REALLY bad tract infection a couple of years ago, he didn't seem quite right when I left for work, and by the time I got home 4 hours later, he wouldn't move and was kind of moaning. He is my baby (he was only about 3 at the time) so I was trauamatized. I took him to the vet, he needed an IV and a catheter and had to stay there for a few days (we were allowed to visit  ). They said if they don't get treated within a day or two when it is that bad they can die! He was fine the night before, but even so, it was so bad that they thought he might have had kidney failure due to the test results.

We also just had a second mast cell tumor removed from our almost 8 yr. old boxer  !! When we had the first one removed we took her to a specialist and they ran all kinds of tests to grade it (see how bad it is), see if it had spread to other parts of her body, etc. Now, every bump we feel on her makes us panic, and has to be tested for cancer cells....

Sorry, I don't mean to turn this into a "pity sick pets" post :thud: !!

Aww, well thanks everyone. I'm glad some people can understand.

Apparently his temp is down to 102 something and seems more alert. He passed a blood clot from the bladder this morning and the ultrasound indicated that there may be another one. I'm not sure why (I didn't talk to the vet myself) but she was not very concerned about the clot or the cause. They're going to redo a urinalysis, recheck his blood work, test the kidney function and check for toxoplasmosis (sp?).

He may be able to come home soon if all that pans out negatively.

I hope everyone else's pets are okay now and in the future. It's just awful.

Sky eyes, that's scary. I'm always afraid Kramer will get a broken bloodfeather. I know what to do, but I'd just hate to panic him by trying to fix it!

Doll - Sorry about your kitty:( Antifreeze is indeed very dangerous. On a side note, I was watching an Animal Cops once and this pyscho...orifice of the derriere....was throwing antifreeze laden food into the neighborhood yards to try and kill the dogs!

Glad to hear yours is doing better nancie:)

And holly, I feel your pain. Having grown up with weimeranners I've seen my fair share of doggy cancer. They seem particularly prone to it:(.

BooBoo is fine now, Leo. He's still pretty PO'd at us, though. I don't know if you've ever had to pull a blood feather before, but it comes out surprisingly easy. I imagine my bird is more mad about the fully grown-in feather I accidentally got before I got ahold of the blood feather shaft. (Sorry, BooBoo!) He broke it right down at the very bottom next to his skin. I think the bird experts out there stress the need to pull blood feathers or pack the end with styptic powder if they are bleeding because they MIGHT bleed to death with no treatment, but that's not to say they will ALWAYS bleed to death.

I'm glad to hear Salem is doing better! It bothers me that his vet isn't concerned about the blood clots. It's a sign of a serious problem and shouldn't be brushed off. :(

Aww, poor birdie! LOL And yes, they can definitely bleed to death if left untreated.

Perhaps I should rephrase the blood clot thing. From what I gather, the vet is paying attention the clot and whatnot, but does not think it is anything to be worried about - that it's just more an unpleasant side affect of what is going on now.

He's in the vet one more night. He is due to be released tomorrow. They were going to release him tonight but they canceled that (after his owners were on the way there) because he was "slightly anemic" and wanted to be sure that he was turned around before going home.

Fingers crossed!

*GASP* Oh Leo, I am sooo sorry! For you, Salem and Chris' parents! Did thedy ever find the reason for his decline?

Not that I know of.

I loved that little guy so much and I can't even stop crying....and he wasn't even technically my cat.

I'm so sorry, thats awful. Please let us know if they find out the cause. By the way, do you know any of his history before you found him? Could this have been a problem that no one was aware of that decided to rear its ugly head? Hang in there

Oh, Leo-man, that's tough.

Its amazing how such independent, aloof creatures can worm their way into our hearts, isn't it? Although from that pic, I'd say he wasnt' aloof at all-guess I'm thinking more of my various cats through the years.

So sorry for your loss.
hugs for you and yours...

No, he wasn't aloof at all. He was the most cuddly dependant cat ever. He would just want to be with you where ever you were.

They don't know his prior history. But last year when they got him, they ran a myriad of tests and everything was negative.

They still do not know the cause. Every vet there is baffled. They've consulted many other vets throughout the region and no one has a clue. His red blood cell count was low this morning, he had horrible difficulty breathing suddenly (chest xrays revealed this was due to fluid around the heart and lungs). He had pretty much every single test for every single thing you could think of.

I am drained right now, though. I just went with his "mom" and sister to pick him up from the vet - they were both sobbing the whole time:( I tried to distract them from thinking about it, but it just didn't work.

Chris is going to be really sad when he gets home. He got so attached to Salem...as you can see from the picture I posted last. That was only a few days after taking the cat in,before giving him to chris' parents.
