DOn't the convict cichlids take care of their young and mouth brood? If, so I would choose the convict cichlids with fry. That would be so interesting to observe!
THough the dwarf cichlids are also very pretty. I would go with the former just because it is quite novel.

Go with some dwarf cichlids. that way you get all the excitment of watching cichlids raise thier fry, they're more colorful than convicts, and you can have a school of hatchets or pencil fish to add a little more depth to the tank. I suggest A. cacatuoides, or some locally breed blue rams.

I voted African Cichlids, but I'm biased...that's the type of fish I want when I can afford a much bigger tank (money-wise and space-wise.) :D What size of tank are you planning?

I personally would do something more interesting... like a biotope. There are many fish that breed and raise fry in community tanks. A. cacatuoides aren't suppose to be difficult to breed.

I didn't like how the question was asked so I was torn. I have a New World Cichlid tank and prefer that tank. However, 6 fish are just more interesting than 2 convicts with fry. With the "Africans" you are bound to get fry anyway.
Convicts do take very good care of their young but they do not mouthbrood.

I have two possible options at my disposal....either a breeding pair of Albino Convicts.....or half a dozen African Cichlids (Yellow labs, Blue Haps, etc).
55 gallon tank.
I'm not paying for anything, just setting it up.
The only thing I was wondering was what would be more interesting to the eye.....the nice colours African Cichlids have to offer.....or Convicts herding their fry around the tank.
The gravel is black for this particular tank, so even the Pink Convicts look decent in it.
If you want any other details to make my question more understandable, just let me know.
Thanks :)

I'd still go with the "Africans" for the same reason. You will have more color and more activity.
Now, once the convicts rear their first brood, you will get some regular colored babies too, things will get a interesting because those babies will breed too.
