Hi, This is my first post to this forum - your archives are great! I have a 15 gallon tall tank (hand-me-down, hoping to upgrade now that husband has graduated from college) with 28W CF lighting. There's about 2 inches of sand with light ferts, and it's. The tank has been set up and running for eight months and we have a few amazon swords, java fern and anacharis growing well.

What's the best way to move this tank during our eight-hour drive to our new home? Already took most of the fish back to the lfs and will get new ones once settled. I don't want to have to completely recycle the tank once we get there. Can I just drain most of the water and cover the tank and transport it in the back of my Explorer tha way? Any advice would be great! Thanks.

Yes you can drain the water and transport that way but I suugest you uproot the plants and lay them in the bottom of the aquarium with about an inch of water. I also suggest that you save more than half your original water and add fresh water when you set it back up again. If you want to remove the water, take newspaper and wet it. Ring it out and gently wrap your plants in it. One in each piece of newspaper. I recommend 1 double sheet for large plants. Single sheet for small stuff. Make sure the paper maintains its moisture during your move. I usually do this with a spray bootle loaded with water and plant food. Stryofoam box with no lid, if you remove plants from tank. Covered in clear plastic. KEEP AWAY FRM EXTREME TEMPERATURES AND DIRECT SUNLIGHT!!!!!

Best of luck!

Thanks! That sounds great. I think I'll do as you suggest and uproot and cover the plants to keep moist and then just leave a bit of water in with the sand. It'll be a nice excuse to relandscape and maybe get a few new types ... !
