Hello,

I would like to make a tank full of glosso. The tank is a small Waterhouse 5 tank which has a fluorescent lamp of 11 W and the tank is 5 gallons.

1. Is the light sufficient?
2. Should I add another 11 W fluorescent lamp (a bit difficult).
3. Is it ok if a stay with the 11 W lamp and just place my desk lamp to shine directly on the glosso from the side of the tank?
4. Will a DIY co2 injection with yeast and sugar be sufficient?
5. Seachem Flourite substrate alone would be fine? Any other suggestions on substrate?
6. How deep should the substrate be?
7. Is there any special fertilization scheme or any other special requirements for glosso?

Thanks.

Glosso will tell you in short order if you're supplying enough light. It will grow upright and get tall if it has insufficient light. You are on the border line with what you are supplying, but I'd give it a shot and see how the plants respond.
For a 5 gal. tank, DIY should work out fine.
Glosso only needs an inch or two of substrate to be comfortable.
This plant is no different in nutritional needs than any of the others, IME.
One suggestion I'd make is not to introduce vegetarians for other fish that will pick at it until it is well established. Trying to grow Glosso in a tank with, for instance Rosy Barbs, will drive you nuts:).

IMO, that lighting is not sufficient. The smaller the tank, the more light you need. Flourescent lights are also not very effective (and I assume you don't have reflectors?). But, to thrive, glosso needs high light and co2. In such a small tank, yes, DIY co2 will be sufficient.

Flourite is fine as a substrate. It can be anywhere between 1-4" thick (more if you want, but I mean...there comes a point when enough is enough;)).

To start, you'd want to put in some fast growing plants like hornwort to suck up nutrients while the glosso takes hold (to prevent algae). You'll also want to cut it up into individual/small groups plantlets and plant it in grid-fashion using tweezers.

You may be interested in growing a Marsilea species instead. Marsilea minuta or Marsilea quadrifolia both resemble glosso quite closely but have much lower light demands (and lower co2 demands as well.)

I just wanted to add a little note, I have my glosso growing new spoutlings all the time now (it's just getting started), but I had a heck of a time trying to revive it from the site that sent them to me, aquariumplant.com. I had read that they don't ship well because they are very sensitive when they're out of water and can literally go bad in a day. Well, when it came in the mail, they were growing tall, indicating they weren't getting enough light, they were mainly yellowish and not green, which could have been lack of light or nutrients, and to top it off, they were all practically DOA. Some how I nursed them back to health though (and I know very very little about plants). What I'm saying is, order from the right place if you plan on buying online and maybe recommend they ship it in water.

In case you're interested, the tank they're in is a 2.5g with an 11watt CF and I use Big Al's fert., a Flourish tab, and Flourish Excel. There are no fish currently in there.
