I have a 29gal tank with 2 gold fish in it. I just cleaned it out and i re filled it. when i put the fish in it they went into the corner. I thought that maybe the water was a little cold. I just put a heater in it so they are laying under that right now. Can the water get to cold to kill them? what is a good temp., and how to I raise the water temp?
Thanks so much!

How much of a water change did you do? If you did an entire water change then that isn't good. That means that you have to start the cycle all over again.

I changed almost all of the water. how do i start all over? I got the fish and he tank with my house we just moved in today and it was dirty so I cleaned it. dont know much about fish. what do I need to do to fix it? and can they die from cold water?

look for something called dechlorinator, that is the most important thing to have added to the water when you changed it, w/out it they will die fairly quickly, also the temp. should have been very close to the temp it was before...

What about the filter? Did you change all of the filter medium? What we are getting at here in the threads about cycling. We are wondering if there is enough good bacteria to break down the ammonia and other nasties produced by the fish.

You want to match the water conditions as close as possible. pH and temp are biggies. You should only do 25% every week...50% at the most. I think that for cycling, you might be ok if it was established. However if the water in your tap is cholorinated, then you need the conditioner to remove it (and other stuff), and the cholrine probably was killing the bacteria to make the tank healthy and stable.

I kept a betta for a good year, before I knew how to do it properly, with chlorinated aweful water. though I think I let the water sit and the chlorine evaporates out. You still need conditioner for chloramine which doesn't. But you should be able to save what you have.

there are stickies about cycling- read them!! (also is you internet search this, you'll find a lot of info, I found some stickeys to be vague, though I didn't read them so closely) Cycling is a fairly dangerous process to do with fish, but they can survive as long as you test the water (aquapharm test kit with mulitple tests for ammonia, nitrite ,nitrate, and pH is what i'd recommend, don't be intimidated by all the test tubes!) and keep toxins like ammonia down with water changes, you might fair well.

Big question here WHAT KIND OF FISH ARE THEY??? That will help a lot for temp and water conditions. You will need to declorinate no matter what, but with a fish type we can recommend the other conditions.

Also when you cleaned it out did you scrub the tank and fixtures or just drain and refill. If you drained and refill you will still have some bacteria (the good stuff) left on the rocks, filter, walls, fixtures, ect......

cold water isntl ikely to kill them although changes in temp up and down will not be good for em.
Definietly dechlorinate the water and match temp like holly sed.
CHANGING ALL THE WATER WONT REQUIRE RECYCLING.
did you do anything besides change water? like change filters or wipe things down?

in the first post he said they were goldfish
