Hi everyone, my roommate and i want to get a fish or several for our dorm room. One or several in a bowl, not too big though. We're looking for something that doesn't need an airator (yeah i can't spell) and doesn't need a heater. Also something that is easy to take care of, maybe cleaning the bowl once a week and feeding once a day. We would also like to stay away from the traditional beta or goldfish. Any ideas??? Pictures would also be great! TIA!!!

These would be perfect:

A tiny, coldwater, air breathing fish that produces very little waste?

Those are some tough requirements, and I cant think of anything that would be suitable. Bettas should be in heated aquariums, the small coldwater fish that I can think of are not capable of breathing air. And goldfish get far too big and produce far too much waste for a bowl.

I can't say I think to highly of bowls for fish.

That said, I'm wondering what you want out of this possible fish. A betta is more personality than you will find in most other similar sized fish. I know of some fish that would not succumb quickly, but any time I think of those fish I would suggest at least 5 to 10 gallons for those fish.

Several friends in college had walmart's generic version of the eclipse acryllic all in one tanks that only lacked a heater.

really the only thing you can put in the bowl is a betta

yup yup yup

you really shouldn'y even consider about getting a fish if yo can't meet th e requirements for owning one

guppies?? i dunno bout heaters... i nvr use it here in south east asia. but guppies are really hardy. in thailand, ppl leave have guppies in bowls and pots everywhere outside their homes, offices,... nothing... just water and fish.. and maybe couple of aquatic plants.. left outside... fed once in... days at a time... nvr any problem... they live.. n breed!! if there's a pair of course.\
how bout small gouramies?? gouramies can live with low-oxygen water. i know from personal experience. small ones like dwarf gouramies grow up to just a couple of cm.. get a big bowl, have a small plant in it.. and u can house guppies or other small hardy fish like tiny little gouramis...

OK, I am an advocate for only one fish that will thrive in a tank/bowl this small and do very well for people
The fish I recommend is the Heterandria formosa, aka the least killie or dwarf live bearer. This guys are hard to come by, these are usually a special order from your pet shop but they are great fish.
The males reach about 1/4 of an inch long at full adult hood and the females are larger at an inch. They are very peaceful fish and thrive in tiny tanks. I own a small colony right now in my 5 gallon. I plan on getting more soon for an outdoor container. But they do well having plants like hornwort floating on the top of the tank and they eat crushed fish flakes. Many breeders keep them in 1 gallon pickle jars and they thrive in them. Since they are native to the southern US, they do not require a heater for their tank. I would say 5 would be perfect for this size tank.
