Well.. my efforts to get my 55g Hex tank running have hit a major speed bump. I filled it up.. and begain the cycling process yesterday. Only to find out that 3 hours after adding 1/2 a bottle of StartRight.. that I had leaks. Apparently my rushed resealing job didnt work as well as planned. I had been using LFS supplied All-Glass brand silicone.. which is EXPENSIVE @ $5 for a small tube, so I was discouraged to use a lot of it on this HUGE tank. It was slowly dripping from around the bottom plastic trim ring. Im guessing the seal around the bottom glass was faulty.. as the sides didnt seem to have any moisture at all.
Now, after searching the site, I've found some 100% pure silicone from the local hardware store.. that says its "food safe" as well. Stop me if I shouldnt use it.. but Its about 10X as much product for the same cost. I'm a bit discouraged.. but not beaten :)

100% silicone is perfectly safe. Some people might not agree, but I've used it and I know a ton of other people who have used it without any problems. One important thing to get a good seal is to make sure you remove ALL the old silicone along the joint you're resealing. So if you're resealing a side, you'll want to remove all the silicone from that side. This will give you a stronger, longer lasting joint. And since your tank is technically not setup, you should take care of this before you have to transplant your fish for repairs.

Thanks much! This silicone seems exactly the same as the stuff from the LFS... Even smells as 'wonderful'. I believe my mistake was improper prep. in the first place. The bottom of this tank is set up very strangely. Its 2 pieces of glass sandwiched on top of each other. This time around, I cut out all of the old silicone (easier said than done) and re sealed the entire bottom of the tank. Hopefully this fixes it.. if not, I believe I'll have a very big terrarium to work with :p

Well.. its holding water! Its filled with gravel and the major bits of wood landscaping. Started the cycling... I just put a feeder goldfish in there to get things rolling. I'll be keeping a close eye on him and the conditions, so if things get messy he'll be going back in the 10g he came from. Yeehaw!
