Howdy.
After reading many, many, many posts and not finding an answer to my problems I thought I would ask for some help. I have problems with cloudy water in my two aquariums. So here is the run down...

Tank 1 (50 gallon)
Amonia 0 mg/L; Nitrite 0 mg/L; Nitrate 20 mg/L; PH 6.6; Phosphate 2.5 mg/L
Fish include 2 Pearl Gouramis, 3 Rasboras, 5 Serpea Tetras, 4 lemon Tetras, A pleco. Used an old filter to cycle the tank. Up and running for 4 months. A small amount of amonia at the begining followed by a small nitrite spike.

Tank 2 (10 gallon)
Amonia 0 mg/L; Nitrite 0 mg/L; Nitrate 5 mg/L; PH 7.2; Phosphate 0 mg/L
1 Beta (Does not play well with others)

Both aquariums get green cloudy water a couple of days after water change. Tap water tests OK (No Phosphates) I have run a diatomic filter and had both aquariums crystal clear for a few days. There is an imbalance somewhere becasue they will get green in about a week. BTW The aquariums are in the middle of my apartment and get no dirrect sunlight.

Any advice or any suggestion on which direction to go now would be greatly appreceated.

Thanks,
Erick

Green Cloudy water.... some kind of algae bloom?
I just treated my tank with Algae Fix and the bloom went away almost instantly. It would help tremendously to find what is causing those algae so you can stop it and don't have to deal with it again and again in future. If the algae is bugging you so much u can use algae fix, it says can be used in fresh water aquariums that have live plants and fish.
I'm not sure what to do with your case that would prevent future algae problems... in my case, i had too much sunlight on my tank.

Hmmmm the lights could be an issue. They are getting 12 hours of light. I'll bet that is excessive. I should put their lights on a timer and not turn them on when I go to work at 7 am.

I feed them what they can eat. Sometimes the Gouramis don't eat, but the pleco attacks the flakes that hit the gravel.

Should I put the lights on a timer and not feed them in the mornings before I go to work? They should be happy eating around 3 when i get home from work.

I have my lights on a timer, as for feeding you can still feed them in the morning as long as they are eating the food... and the plecos are good for cleaning up after the others... If you want to move their feeding time that is up to you. I think another question is does your tank have live plants? And what type of lighting do you have? Also what temp are you keeping your tank at?

Do you have live plants? If you don't then I wouldn't recommend leaving the light on for too long, turn on the light only when you're around.

You can also try reducing the feeding to once a day, that will cut down on waste and excess phosphate from the waste.

No live plants.

50 gallon is at 75 F. The light that came with the aquarium is a coralife
10,000K

10 gallon is at 77 F and the light is a 15W flourencent from Allglass that came with the tank.

The 10 gallon is far worse than the 50.
