I have a WHisper filter right now, don'tknow which size as it looks old as dirt and has no indicator of which size it is as I got it used with my tank but I know it uses those Tetra biobags and I have a huge canister of activated carbon and a bunch of biobag refills that came with it. Its slow as molasses though and I am not sure if its the right sized filter for this size tank. Trying to speed up the water intake flow proves useless at this point it never changes.

Anyway, the question is, what other power filters (HOB) use biobags and/or activated carbon? I like the biowheel filters but they use those sealed cartridges which I am not too keen on. The Aquaclear price is right, but once again I have a huge can of carbon that would go to waste with either of these. Anyone know what GOOD HOB power filter uses biobags or at least loose carbon?

You can use the carbon in an Aquaclear. Just put some into a filter bag and use in place of their carbon.

Actually you can use the carbon in the Whisper too, just takes a little more work.

I've got an Aquaclear on one tank, and a Penguin on another. I much prefer the Aquaclear. There is so much flexibility with what you can put in for media, and you can use your carbon in there too. :-) In terms of the Penguin, since the biowheel is where the largest colony of bacteria live, it shouldn't be an issue for changing out the sealed cartridges. I'm sure there is a way of using different media though, instead of replacing with the same cartidges.

I think the bigger LFS will sell little mesh bags that you could put carbon in, it doesn't have to fit perfectly in the space, as long as it doesn't flow out. If it does, you could anchor it with a sponge, which is a good filter media to use too

You may look at the Emperor instead of the Penquin. It has a refillable media container in which you can use your loose charcoal, and you still have the benefit of the Biowheel.

it's good to use carbon it removes the smell & yellow colors from the water

yes but then you replace it of leave it for bio to grow in it
