Again, Ive been reading a multitude of theories and opinons about melafix (as well as others). I have decided I need to enumerate these opinions in one place with a poll. We all know how accurate those can be
I tend to like the stuff made out of tea tree oil. It's got a TON of uses and one thing it's really good for cuts and scrapes. And not just with fish. I used to use a product with tea tree oil for the little cuts and scrapes on my horses and they always healed faster and better than if I didn't use it.
It's good stuff, but it's not a cure all. The thing I like about it best is that it never seems to hurt.
I tried it, but I can heal fins faster with aquarium salt and turning up the heat. The only fish I ever used it on ended up dying. Any one see it actually work?
I have yet to have any fish that really needed it, but i do know that anything with tea tree oil is a good thing. (I use stuff that has the tea tree oil and it heals cuts quickly, reduces scars, and when you mix it with boiling water and breath it in is helps reduce congestion.)
I played with a sample of it and found that once in the water any surface agitation caused bubbles. Anyone else notice this?
Yeah, I noticed that the stuff left a film of gunk on the surface of the water, and if I fed my fish, they would get sick. A few died... I found out the hard way that it was better to use a half of a dose than what is reccommended on the bottle....
When I use half a dose though, it actually works quite well in eliminating fungus and clearing up cuts, abrasions, sores, etc...
You MUST increase the airation in the tank while using this product.
I had a pleco with some kind of fin rot. The top of his tail fin literally rotted off and I put him in a hospital tank and medicated him with Melafix for a couple weeks. The whitish colored rot went away and his tail fin has grown back. You can't tell he ever had a problem.
my fish had a gnarly cut on his head (jumping from a tank) and it healed it so quick and his color vastly improved (better than before his jump) and has stayed that way. so i dont know if it treated anything else, but i like the stuff.
