I just picked up a shovelnose catfish from a friend who is getting out of the hobby. I am just trying to figure out what to feed him... I dont believe he is ready for live foods yet, hes about 4 inches in length, but still seems to small to accept feeders... Ive heard earthworms are good, but Im kind of leary about dropping them into my tank.. I also keep an oscar and N venustus in the same tank....Both take feeders, but only for a treat every few weeks...
It doesnt seem the shovelnose is going to accept their pellets or algae wafers, so just wondering what other options I may have

Thanks in advance
Luke

What kind of shovelnose? There are quite a few varieties of shovelnoses.
I'm guessing its a lima or a tiger shovelnose, either way it doesn't make a difference because they dont really require a specialized diet, just your regular pred fish diet. Try pellets, shrimp, earthworm, scallop, any market fish, squid, anything meaty.

I'll tell you know stay clear of feeders, they're not that good for them and can introduce disease into your tank. If you do use feeders use fish other than goldfish, and quarantine.

Our tiger shovelnose would eat beef heart and shrimp. Oh, and anyone else he could fit in his mouth.....
