Hi everyone. I'm in the process of updating to a 75g tank & I have no idea what type of fish will go well with the 2 blood parrot cichlids that I adopted. I don't know much about "bigger" fish. I've thought about silver dollars but that's about it. Any information is much appreciated!! Thanks!!

Actually, I've read on two other sites that blood parrots are mild mannered & will not harm silver dollars...Silver dollars were listed as good tankmates...I'm going to go see if I can find the sites that I read that on. Thanks!!

I have a friend with 2 Bps. They were in with a few silver dollars. One of the bps had to be moved to his own tank because it killed one SD and was after another. THe other Bp has been in with the SDs for almost a year now with no problems. If you try it, make sure to monitor things for individual agression issues.
I don't think BP can kill any other fish. Their mounths are deformed, they don't close all the way. They can't bite or nip. The only thing they can do is to chase other fish. I have a tank with 2 BP, 1 gold severum, 4 Silver dollars and 1 synodontis eupterus. BP do chase SD quite often but don't harm them. They are quite inquisitive and chase other fish mostly out of curiousity. Sometimes they try to liplock with the gold severum.
As with the dead SD. Could it be that SD was sick and weak and they just took a shot at him? After all any fish will attack a sick one...

Although They May Not Be Able To Physically Kill The Fish...they Will Stress It Out To The Point Where It Will Eventually Die....

Thanks for the replies. My BP's "lip-lock" all the time...And they do chase eachother, the blood-fin tetras, & the cory...However, they spend more time aggravating eachother than any of the other fish. I would like a school of tetras, a larger variety, to put in the new tank but I don't know which ones to look into. I think I am going to try the silver dollars, they're neat fish. I'm just looking forward to having "bigger" fish now.

Good Luck. The BP may or may not chase and kill the SD. Luck of the draw.
PS--A 75 is a little small for 2 BP and some SD. Will be OK for a while. A 100gal would be better.

It depends on the tank they were raised. I adopted my 8" bp and it was with 5" oscars. the only tankemate he has is a 5" pike and thats just because he,s to fast and the bp can't fit inhis cave. As far as tankemates go I'll get him some slow one of same aggresion so they can't run up, bite him and run away without him being able to do anything about it. How small are they and what type of tank did they come from? I'd say get a silver dollar as a trial. better you get a cheap community fish and loose 5$ of fish than getting an aggresion cichlid for community bloods and loose $60+ worth of fish

my parrots mouth isn't deformed. I've watched him hunt and eat feeder gups.

I actually meant the way they are developed. All the parrots I've seen in stores (including mine) don't close their mouth all the way. It looks like they are always surprised :)

the fish store got 2 3.5" ones with really twisted mouthes
Conect the dots. that was the shape of there mouthes.

my parrot is perfect!! It has the shape of a parrot without the rediculuse amount of bloat its mouth is perfect it has dark red color, and it is eght inches. purists don't like them because of mishaped spines mouthes fins and bad immunity. infact the people who can crack code for parrots have to cull most of the fry because they are to deformed. like I said pefore, my NP is an example that purists will have to find new resons to hate other that they are not natural or learn to love them.

Hi all...I just had to share in my excitement...My 75g is up & running like it should be w/ gravel & ornaments from a cycled tank...Just trying to help it along. So, I've still got to make fish decisions & I'm still as clueless as before. Are there any kind of larger tetras that would go well with my 2 BP's? If I decide on a silver dollar, will one be happy by itself? I don't want to get just one of a fish if it is happier w/ another of it's own kind. Thanks again!!
